Thought Experiment (or maybe a puzzle)
(I believe this very thing happened in Texas recently)  Suppose your society has had what may be the driest year on record (with all the negative consequences that relate).  If it is dry until Jan. 1, it will be a new record.  It is Dec. 31.  Do you hope it rains today?

Perhaps your answer speaks to the impossibility of a(n?) utopia?  Or (and?) our preference for that which is not embodied?

I'm having a hard time caring since we're only talking about a difference of ONE day.

I guess I'm leaning towards hoping for it to rain. I remember last summer by the 20th 103 temperature in a row I was ready for rain. Rain was never more beautiful than it was the day it rained. :)

Breaking a record by just one day isn't worth it to me.

analyze me,
Chrissy

Hmmmm takes out pipe and tweed coat :)

First I dont care about the record...there nothing good/positive about achieving it. Theres nothing to gain.

On the flip side whats a day?..Even with "with all the negative consequences that relate" A day would change very little unless people are dropping dead on the streets.

Im very close to not caring either way, but I will say LET IT RAIN...cheesy christian song.... Its the only possible decent thing i can see in either choice...plus I like the rain :)

Have I participated the right way?

I say let the rain fall because its the start of a new year, like a new beginning almost, and I don't give one iota about a stupid record like that...who would come up with such a thing! (yes, I know its just an experiment)

I really don't care either way. It's not that important to me!

OK Travis, This is from Tim: Good question, but a better question is, How many pancakes does it take to shingle a dog house?????
And, What is a dog?

My first impulse is to say no but then I immediately think of how this would affect me and many other people and I hope it rains. But were it like, one of those hottest day records in the middle of summer I always hope that the record is broken, I dont really know why, but it doesnt directly affect me in much of a negative way, unless i have to sit in my hot car until the air conditioning gets cold, and though old people without air conditioning seem to drop like flies on those days, none of them are related to me and therefore that thought is the farthest thing from my mind, unless posed as a question that I feel compelled to take time to think about.

I would hope it doesn't rain until the record is set. Breaking records is fun! I'd be disappointed to go through all the misery of a dry spell without having something to brag about or tell my grandkids.

"Yeah, we had the longest dryspell ever back in '08."

After the record was set, then I'd want it to rain. But it probably wouldn't. So a small triumph would be eclipsed by a lot more misery. Then again, I don't have to mow the lawn as much when it doesn't rain.

Rain is substantial, so is dry soil and dead plants, etc. Years and records are only ideas (they are conceptions of the mind, not something you can touch - even if the swimsuit calendar makes you want to). The question is (I think) meant to make us think about how often we might prefer an idea over something substantial.

All of you who said you'd want it to rain are liars (Emily's post explained how you deceived yourselves by thinking about your answers), especially Marlucio. He's so much a liar, he can't even stand up when he's talking.

Analysis of Chrissy: Shhhhhh. Make me a sandwich.

Only smart person here is Tim:
The answer is 11 (because that dog house goes to 11).
Of course, the answer to the second question is (more obviously) another question: What is a man? (Something about an all-you-can eat shingle and sausage breakfast should be involved here...)

Well, Tim feels really special for having the only right answer. Do I get any credit I typed his answer. And Tim says, "I did alright for a Bozo who never finished college."
